Our research focus

Clinical epidemiology research investigates the distribution and determinants of health and disease in patient populations to guide clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes. It applies epidemiological methods, such as observational studies and cohort analyses, within clinical settings to study the causes, risk factors, natural history, and outcomes of diseases and treatments. Clinical epidemiology research aims to identify patterns and associations that can inform healthcare practices, policies, and interventions tailored to individual patient needs.

Health services research focuses on studying how healthcare is organized, delivered, financed, and accessed to improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of healthcare services. It examines factors such as healthcare policies, healthcare provider practices, patient behaviors and experiences, and the impact of these factors on health outcomes and healthcare delivery. The findings from health services research inform policymakers, healthcare providers, and administrators on how to better allocate resources, design interventions, and implement policies to enhance healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

The department is a formal partner of the Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (IDRR). The IDRR was created in 2012 through a partnership between CMCC and the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ontario Tech University. The Institute conducts policy-relevant research aimed at improving the well-being of people with disability and those who need rehabilitation. The world-class researchers at the IDRR work at the local, national and global level to evaluate and implement effect community-based interventions. The IDRR is designated as a WHO Collaboration Center on Rehabilitation and Musculoskeletal Health, and it is a member of the WHO World Rehabilitation Alliance. IDRR research has national and international reach. More information regarding the IDRR, their research and team members can be found on their website: https://idrr.ontariotechu.ca/index.php

In addition to the IDRR, our team has developed formal partnerships with local, national and international groups. These relationships include collaborations with individual researchers, research institutes, university departments and professional associations.

The department is fortunate to house a group of talented and dedicated researchers with vast expertise
