For over 30 years, my research interests have included investigations of immune consequences of neoplasia, severe trauma (thermal or mechanical), shock/clinical sepsis and the mode of action of natural and synthetic immunomodulatory compounds. Presently my research involves studies of cellular and molecular mechanisms of systemic effects of spinal manipulative therapy (SMT). These studies focus on the effect of SMT on the integrated neuro-immune cytokine network and its role in regulation of the inflammatory response associated with musculoskeletal disorders. I completed my PhD in immunopharmacology at the Polish Academy of Sciences and went on to complete a postdoctoral Fellowship from the Medical Research Council of Canada (currently CIHR) at the Institut Armand Frappier, Centre Recherche en Immunologie in Quebec. Prior to joining CMCC, I was an assistant professor of Surgery and Immunology at the University of Toronto, a staff Research Scientist at the Toronto Hospital (General Surgery) and the Sunnybrook Trauma Research Group, National Defence Research Scientist and a senior Research Scientist at The Wellesley Hospital Institute. I have published over 100 manuscripts in peer-reviewed clinical and basic science journals including Nature, Immunology, J. of Clinical Immunology, J. of Trauma, J. of Surgical Research, Annals of Surgery, Archives of Surgery, Clinical and Experimental Immunology and in other leading journals. Results of my recent studies have been published in the Clinical J. of Pain, J. of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Chiropractic & Osteopathy and J. of Chiropractic Education. In the past 15 years at CMCC, I have coordinated and taught the Immunology (PA 2204) and Pathoimmunology (2203) courses. And in 2016 I was honoured to receive The William D. Peek Award for excellence in teaching.
